2015 Zucchini Smackdown results

Local cooks brought out their favorite recipes for the Seville Farm Market’s popular annual Zucchini Smackdown Aug. 15 at Maria Stanhope Park.

The “celebrity” judges for this year’s event were Cloverleaf High School Principal Jamie Lormeau, Cloverleaf High School Associate Principal Bart Randolph and Cloverleaf Schools Superintendent Daryl Kubilus.

Dave Brantner of Seville took first place in the Best Savory Dish category with a Zucchini Frittata. Additional entries included a Summer Zucchini Chili from Andrea Fussi and Heather Donley’s Curried Zucchini Soup.

In the Best Sweet Dish category, the judges chose Sasha’s Chocolate Zucchini Bread made by Olga Reswow Griffin of Wadsworth. She said the recipe was given to her years ago by her Aunt Vera.

“It’s like a chocolate brownie. That’s what it tastes like,” Griffin said.

Other entries in the sweets category included Pineapple Zucchini Sheet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting by Amy Huttinger and Fussi’s Zucchini Chocolate Chip Pecan Cookies.

The winner in the Largest Zucchini Contest was market vendor Carolyn Keiper, who brought in a squash tipping the scales at 6.86 pounds.

The Seville Farm Market is open 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday through Sept. 26. Maria Stanhope Park is located across from Seville United Methodist Church at 74 W. Main St., Seville.
