It's Zucchini Smackdown time!

No, it's not hand-to-hand combat with large green squash ... as interesting as that would be.

Instead, it's time to put one of the garden's most prodigious vegetables to good use in the Seville Farm Market's annual cooking contest: The Zucchini Smackdown! It takes place 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 20, at Maria Stanhope Park in Seville.

Now in its third year, the competition invites home cooks to prepare their most creative, delicious zucchini recipes and bring them to the Seville Farm Market for judging. A panel of local celebrities will choose winners in two categories: Best Savory Dish and Best Sweet Dish. A prize also will be awarded for the Largest Homegrown Zucchini!

Past winning dishes have included: Zucchini Chive Whole Wheat Bread, Zucchini "Crab" Cakes, Chocolate-Coffee Zucchini Torte and Zucchini Cobbler.

We invite you to join us for this homegrown contest that promotes culinary creativity and the use of fresh, local produce. Here's what you need to know:

Contest Rules:

1.) Dish must be made from zucchini you grew or bought at the farm market.

2.) Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Best Savory Dish, Best Sweet Dish and Largest Zucchini.

3.) Entrants must provide recipes for each dish, which will be posted at www.sevillefarmmarket.blogspot.com.

4.) All entries must be in place for judging by 10 a.m., Saturday, August 20.

5.) A panel of local celebrity judges will determine the winners.

6.) This contest is open to the world! All ages welcome.
